ELA Enrichment – Optional Extensions
To support our English Language Arts curriculum, I am offering optional extension activities that allow students to practice reading, writing, speaking, and research skills in meaningful ways. These are not required assignments, but they provide extra opportunities for students who enjoy exploring topics more deeply.
Optional Extension Ideas:
🔎 Research Connection: Students can research a modern farming technique that resembles methods used by the Maya, then summarize what they discover. (Research + Informational Writing)
👨👩👧👦 Family Interview: Students may interview a family member about farming or gardening challenges in different climates, then retell or write about what they learned. (Speaking, Listening, and Narrative Writing)
📰 Current Events: Students can find a recent news article about sustainable agriculture, read it closely, and explain how it connects to what we are studying. (Reading Comprehension + Analysis)
Why try these?
Even though these activities are optional, they help strengthen important ELA skills by:
Practicing research and reading comprehension with informational texts.
Developing writing and summarizing skills through short explanations or reflections.
Building speaking and listening abilities through interviews and discussions.
Encouraging critical thinking as students make connections across texts, history, and real life.
👉 Reminder: These are completely optional. Students will not be penalized if they do not complete them. They are simply enrichment opportunities for those who are curious and motivated.
