Fifth Grade Families,
We’ve moved into one of my favorite math units - volume! This week, students are learning how to measure the space inside a 3D shape, and they are off to a great start.
To build understanding, students used unit cubes to construct rectangular prisms. By counting the cubes, they discovered what volume really means. From there, we learned a quicker and more efficient strategy using the formula:
V = length × width × height
This helps students understand why the formula works, not just how to use it.
Real-World Connections
We talked about how volume shows up in everyday life, such as:
How much soil fits in a planter box
How many books fit in a storage bin
How much water an aquarium can hold
How much cereal is inside a cereal box
Try This at Home 🏠
Pick a rectangular box at home (a cereal box, tissue box, or shoebox works well).Have your child:
Measure the length, width, and height (in inches or centimeters)
Multiply those measurements together
Label the answer using cubic units (like cubic inches)
This quick activity helps reinforce what we’re learning in class in a fun, hands-on way.
Looking Ahead
Later this week, we’ll also begin exploring the area of right triangles. You can ask your child:
“How is a triangle related to a rectangle?”
Thank you for your continued support at home, it truly helps our students grow in confidence and understanding.
