As we kick off an exciting new school year, I wanted to take a moment to share some important information about the foundation of our curriculum—the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs).
The SOLs are a set of educational standards developed by the Virginia Department of Education. These standards outline what students should know and be able to do at each grade level in subjects such as math, reading, science, and social studies. They serve as a clear roadmap to ensure all students across the state receive a consistent, high-quality education.
What Does This Mean for Fifth Grade?
In our classroom, the SOLs will guide everything we do—from the units we study to the skills we focus on and the ways we assess progress. Here’s a quick look at what your child will be learning:
Reading & Writing: We'll explore a variety of fiction and nonfiction texts, build comprehension strategies, and strengthen writing skills by focusing on structure, clarity, and purpose.
Mathematics: Expect to see work on fractions, decimals, geometry, measurement, and multi-step problem solving.
Science: From ecosystems to matter and energy, fifth-grade science dives into hands-on investigations and real-world connections.
Social Studies: We'll journey through U.S. history from the founding of the nation through the Civil War, developing historical thinking and research skills along the way.
Why Are the SOLs Important?
The SOLs help ensure that all students are developing the essential skills they need to be successful—not just this year, but in middle school and beyond. They also help parents, teachers, and schools stay aligned and focused on common learning goals.
How You Can Support at Home
Stay informed: I’ll be sharing updates throughout the year about what standards we’re focusing on.
Ask questions: Encourage your child to explain what they’re learning and how it connects to the world around them.
Use resources: The Virginia Department of Education website has helpful tools and practice items if you want to explore further.
Thank you for being a partner in your child’s learning journey. With your support an
d the structure provided by the SOLs, we’re set up for a meaningful and successful school year! As always, please reach out to me if you have any questions. The links below will take you to the most recent standards.
