Our First Weeks as Fifth Grade Detectives 🔍

Fifth Grade Families,

What a start! Since our first day on August 11, your fifth graders have jumped into new routines, new notebooks, and a whole lot of thinking. I'm already impressed by how quickly this class has settled in and how hard they've worked.

Getting into the groove. We spent the first few days learning how our classroom runs: morning routines, how we move between subjects, and how to take care of our materials. These small habits add up, and the class is already moving like a team.

Science: Our first investigation. We opened the year with the scientific method, and our first case was a sweet one: Does the temperature of water affect how fast a sugar cube dissolves? Students wrote a hypothesis, identified the independent variable (water temperature) and dependent variable (time to dissolve), collected data, and graphed the results. Ask your detective what we discovered!

Math: Exploring Numbers. Our first math unit digs into place value and how numbers are built. Students are reading, writing, and comparing big numbers and explaining their thinking. Try this at home: "What's the value of the 7 in 3,752,108?"

Reading & Writing: The Badlands Sleuth. In our Chemical Matter unit, students are reading a mystery while learning how scientists study matter, the stuff everything is made of. It's a perfect pairing with our science work!

How you can help at home: Ask your child to teach you one thing they learned each day. Explaining it out loud is one of the best ways to lock in learning. A steady bedtime and a packed backpack the night before make a big difference, too.
