10 Conversation Starters Beyond “How Was Your Day?"

If you’ve ever asked your child, “How was your day?” and gotten a one-word answer like “fine” or “good,” you’re not alone! By fifth grade, kids are experts at keeping school stories short. The good news is that with the right questions, you can spark deeper conversations that give you a real glimpse into their world.

Here are 10 conversation starters you can try at the dinner table, on the ride home, or during bedtime routines:

  1. What made you laugh today?

  2. What’s something kind you saw someone do?

  3. If you could switch seats with anyone in class for a day, who would it be and why?

  4. What’s a question you asked in class today?

  5. Who did you spend the most time with at recess?

  6. What was the most interesting thing you learned?

  7. Was there a part of your day that felt challenging? How did you handle it?

  8. If you could give your teacher one superpower to use in class, what would it be?

  9. What’s something you’re proud of from today?

  10. If tomorrow could be a “do-over,” what would you change?

Why These Questions Work

These types of prompts go beyond yes/no answers and invite kids to share details about their feelings, friendships, and learning. Plus, when parents ask with genuine curiosity (and listen without rushing), kids often open up more than we expect.

Next time you’re tempted to ask, “How was your day?” try one of these instead—you might be surprised by the stories that unfold.
